Ruth storms through the door, eyes flashing. Calvin trails behind, quiet. The reading of the will still hangs on them like cheap smoke. Their dead parent left nothing to chance. Ruth’s brother and sister got their money the second they walked in—each already popped out kids with the family blood. Ruth, stuck with a stepson, gets nothing until she pushes out her own. Three years. After that, the others scoop the whole pot. She slams her purse on the table. “They’re spitting on you. On us.” Calvin rubs the back of his neck. “We’ll be fine. Don’t need the cash.” Ruth turns, hard stare cutting him. “I’m not letting him win from the grave.” She steps close, voice low. “You put a baby in me, the money comes straight here. Your genes count. The old man’s rules, his loss.” Her hand slides down his chest, fingers hooking his belt. She pulls him in, breath hot against his mouth. No space left between them. Calvin’s pulse kicks hard. Ruth’s eyes dare him to say no.
