Janey found the letters by accident. Stapler drawer, not the one she meant to open. There they were, torn edges still sharp, all the schools she’d applied to. Every single acceptance. She stood in the quiet office and felt the floor drop. When she slammed them on the kitchen table, Mike didn’t even blink. He just leaned back in the chair and told her the truth wrapped in something softer: he kept them because the world out there would chew her up. College guys especially. She wasn’t ready. He said it like it was obvious, like keeping her was the same thing as keeping her safe. She told him she wanted to meet people. Real people. The word hung there and they both knew what she meant. Mike’s eyes didn’t move off her. He said he could give her what those boys would try to take. Said it slow, like he was already tasting it. She’s never been touched, and he offered to fix that before any stranger got the chance. His hand rested on the letters like they belonged to him now. Janey felt the heat climb her neck, the sick twist of wanting to believe him even while the proof of his lie sat right between them.
